Anorexia nervosa term paper

There are several psychological, genetic, biological, developmental, and social factors that may predispose people to developing this condition. Anorexia nervosa may be encouraged because of our society's emphasis on (sometimes even extreme) weight loss and thinness, especially for women.

Some people notice that they have developed other obsessive difficulties, such as having to stick to rigid routines and times, or perhaps fears of 'contamination', a need to study or work all the time, or difficulty in spending money appropriately.

Women with anorexia severely limit the amount of food they eat to prevent weight gain. People with anorexia usually have an intense fear of gaining weight and may think they are fat even when they are thin. Women with anorexia may also exercise too much so that they do not gain weight. Over time, eating so little food leads to serious health problems and sometimes death.

Dr. Roxanne Dryden-Edwards is an adult, child, and adolescent psychiatrist. She is a former Chair of the Committee on Developmental Disabilities for the American Psychiatric Association, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and Medical Director of the National Center for Children and Families in Bethesda, Maryland.

One of the main signs of anorexia is not eating enough food. You might not eat because you think you’ll become perfect if you lose a lot of weight. But starving yourself can make you very sick, or even lead to death, so you need to get help.
